From HER: The Magazine Turns 3

Stories / March 12, 2014

I love the song “We are family” sung by the group Sister Sledge. It came out in 1979 and its lyrics celebrated the close relationship of the four Sledge sisters and over time also became an anthem about the power of family.

In this issue we celebrate family, too. In HER Story (p. 16) we focus on Shelly, Stefani and Stacy Schrimpf who grew up in Taos. They started ballet lessons when they were each 4 or 5 years old and their love of dance became their livelihood. Today they operate STEPS Dance and Pilates Studio in Osage Beach and a new location in Wardsville, the first here to offer training on the Cadillac Trapeze Table.

Our cover story takes a peek inside the hectic lives of the Wilson family (p. 12). An orthopedic surgeon at JCMG, Joyce and Steve, a teacher and wrestling coach at Helias, share their experiences raising their four daughters: 4-year-old Sierra and 2-year-old triplets Alanna, Mikayla and Selena.

Like many working parents, their children go to day care, and in HER Career (p. 32) we profile Diana Finnie, an Infant/Toddler Teacher at Jefferson City Day Care Center. Far from just taking care of children, her job, like that of parents, is about furthering their education and development.

Colleen Scholer, publisher of the local Macaroni Kid e-newsletter and website, shares her family’s love of outdoor activities, including bike riding together on the Katy Trail (p. 26). It’s our belief that the family that plays together stays connected and our 6 of the Best features games and activities for the entire family (p. 8).

Our Current Trends and Home Essentials sections focus on modern bedroom décor that allows children to grow into their rooms (p. 28). A big part of family life is celebrating milestones like the first time we ride a bike, the first day of school and of course birthdays. Carol Wieberg, owner of Frosted Art Studio, created three whimsical birthday cakes that will be the hit of the party.

Speaking of milestones –HER Magazine is three years old!!! Its longevity is due to our HER family, our amazing team of photographers, graphic designers, marketing consultants and publisher. We’re grateful to the women, men and children who have graced our pages and allowed us to tell their stories and to the businesses that have supported us throughout the growth of the magazine. We also offer a heartfelt thanks to our readers who motivate us to raise the bar each issue and seek out stories that matter. We love hearing from you and we don’t take you for granted.

We hope you enjoy our first Family Issue. We’ve been planning to do one for a while and the timing just seemed right to do it now, when all of us are a bit cabin crazy from being inside and long to be outdoors with everything in bloom.

“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” –Michael J. Fox
