From HER: The Art of Entertaining

Stories / August 5, 2014

In this issue of HER, we celebrate the art of entertaining. Whether it’s a small deck or patio or a more elaborate outdoor entertainment area, a backyard party is a great way to entertain friends and family at this time of year. While the guest list is your responsibility, we’ve turned to local talents who share their tips on food, décor and drinks.

As someone who loves to read cookbooks for fun and watch shows on The Cooking Channel and the Food Network, I appreciate the art of cooking and entertaining. Some people just have a natural flair for both.

It was great fun to watch celebrity chef and Jefferson City native Johnny Graham of Revel Catering preparing an amazing menu of meats for the grill and other dishes with Eastern flavors and seasonal produce for our cover story.

River City Florist’s Marlo Bolinger created some original centerpieces using succulents and natural textures that added to the décor, and Faith Prenger, a mixologist at Spectators, created a signature drink for the event and offers tips for stocking your own bar.

Our backyard party was held at the home of Mike and Kim Roberts at their new outdoor entertainment area. We provide the details of this addition that fits into the landscape and serves as an extension of their living space. This issue’s Home Essentials features accessories to add to the décor of any outdoor deck or patio.

As we’re all spending more time outdoors, most of us are showing a bit more skin. In our last issue, we discussed the dangers of tanning beds, but using one of our 6 of the Best sunless tanners you can achieve a healthy glow without the danger of sun damage. It’s also time to wear those sexy summertime sandals and Dr. Jody McAleer, JCMG Podiatry, also discusses ways to put your best feet forward.

Staying cool during the hot summer months is a priority and we found some tropical drinks at area venues like Shrunken Heads and J.Pfenny’s that smell of coconut and rum. If you’re not going to the islands these cocktails will definitely put you in mood for a getaway.

It’s also wedding season and our Career Spotlight features Hannah Snitker from Canterbury Hill & Winery, who plans a variety of large and small wedding receptions and corporate events.

We also say goodbye to Ashton Leslie who recently moved on to another opportunity. She has been with HER Magazine from the beginning and was instrumental in helping to grow the publication. We offer her our heartfelt thanks and wish her good luck in both her new job and her upcoming marriage in August.

A big thank you also goes to Janelle Wilbers Haley, a marketing consultant at The News Tribune, who has stepped in to work on HER Magazine.

We hope you enjoy our celebration of summer and the outdoors.
