From the editors: Fall Tailgating Issue

Stories / October 7, 2013

HER Magazine September- OctoberThe crisp air, colorful foliage and Friday night football are the signs of autumn in many communities in Mid Missouri. It’s also time to cheer on the Tigers – the Lincoln University’s Blue Tigers and the Mizzou Tigers –  and attend tailgating events before the big game.

We captured the food, fashion and team spirit in our Kickoff to Fall coverage in this issue. We held our own tailgate party in the parking lot near the Dwight T. Reed football stadium at Lincoln University or Faurot Field at the University of Missouri.

Chef Riley Epperson from Hy-Vee grilled some different options for our

tailgating party, including a new twist on the s’more. Check out the recipes on page 20-21). We’ve also got some great looks for fans, too, (p. 12-14) and all kinds of Missouri Tigers “stuff” from flags and tumblers to ceramic chip and dip platter.

It’s not all fun and games though as classes, homework and tests also resume. HER Career (p. 35) explores the job of the high school counselor at Blair Oaks and we also visit some home school families in our community. See HER Family (p. 24-25).

We also share the story of Sally Williams, a graduate of Jefferson City High School and the University of Missouri who has a dream job in the country music industry in Nashville.  See HER Story (page 16-18).

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many women participate in the Susan G. Komen 5k Walk or run, in Columbia on October 12.  Almost every one of us has a close friend or loved one that’s been diagnosed with breast cancer.  I know several — a former teacher, my own doctor and one of my closest friends. As we honor these women in our lives – those we’ve lost and survivors – we must also educate and encourage each other to become advocates of our own breast health. Early detection saves lives and there’s new technology available at Capital Region Medical Center that can help in this effort (see p. 32-33).

In preparation for upcoming HER Bridal issue and the Mid Mo Marry Me Bridal Show on Sunday, December 29, 2013, we’re holding a Best Proposal contest. The grand prize includes a photo shoot with Lindsey Pantaleo and coverage in HER magazine, among other prizes. Please see full rules newstribune.com/contest.

As a thank you to our readers each of the 6 of the Best items (p. 8) are up for grabs in our “Win It With Her” promotion.  Go online to register and you could win one of six separate giveaways.
